稱謂代表了一個(gè)人的職位、職銜或?qū)W銜，體現(xiàn)了一個(gè)人的資歷和地位。稱謂的誤譯不僅是對(duì)有關(guān)人員的不尊重，而且也會(huì)產(chǎn)生種種不良的后果。 稱謂的準(zhǔn)確翻譯其關(guān)鍵在于譯員對(duì)有關(guān)人員的身份及其稱謂的表達(dá)是否有一個(gè)正確的理解，尤其是對(duì)稱謂語(yǔ)的認(rèn)識(shí)。
一般說(shuō)來(lái)，各類機(jī)構(gòu)或組織的首長(zhǎng)其漢語(yǔ)稱謂譯成英語(yǔ)時(shí)雖可套用通用詞head，但從比較嚴(yán)格的意義上看，應(yīng)使用特定的、規(guī)范的稱謂語(yǔ)。例如：
校長(zhǎng)（大學(xué)）：President of Beijing University
校長(zhǎng)（中小學(xué)）：Principal/Headmaster of Donghai Middle School
院長(zhǎng)（大學(xué)下屬）：Dean of the Graduate School
系主任（大學(xué)學(xué)院下屬）：Chair/Chairman of the English Department
會(huì)長(zhǎng)/主席（學(xué)/協(xié)會(huì)）：President of the Student Union, Shanghai University?
廠長(zhǎng)（企業(yè)）：Director of the Machine Tools Manufacturing Plant
院長(zhǎng)（醫(yī)院）：Director of Huadong Hospital
主任（中心）：Director of the Business Center
主任(行政）：Director of Foreign Affairs Office
行長(zhǎng) (銀行)：President of the Bank for International Settlements
董事長(zhǎng)（企業(yè)）：Chairman of the Board of Directors
董事長(zhǎng)（學(xué)校）：Chairman of the Board of Trustees
首席長(zhǎng)官的漢語(yǔ)稱謂常以“總……”表示，而表示首席長(zhǎng)官的英語(yǔ)稱謂語(yǔ)則常帶有chief, general, head, managing這類詞，因此當(dāng)翻譯冠以“總”字的頭銜時(shí)，需遵循英語(yǔ)頭銜的表達(dá)習(xí)慣：

有些部門(mén)或機(jī)構(gòu)的首長(zhǎng)或主管的英譯，可以一些通用的頭銜詞表示，例如下列機(jī)構(gòu)的負(fù)責(zé)人可以用director，head或chief來(lái)表示：

例：局長(zhǎng) director of the bureau, head of the bureau, bureau chief
國(guó)務(wù)院the State Council屬下的部為ministry，所以部長(zhǎng)叫作 minister。另外，公署專員叫做commissioner，其辦事機(jī)構(gòu)叫做“專員公署”，英語(yǔ)為 prefectural commissioner's office。
漢語(yǔ)中表示副職的頭銜一般都冠以“副”字，英譯時(shí)需視詞語(yǔ)的固定搭配或表達(dá)習(xí)慣等情況，可選擇vice，associate, assistant, deputy 等詞。相對(duì)而言，vice使用面較廣，例如：
副總統(tǒng)(或大學(xué)副校長(zhǎng)等）vice president
副主席(或系副主任等）vice chairman
副總理 vice premier
副部長(zhǎng) vice minister
副省長(zhǎng) vice governor
副市長(zhǎng)vice mayor

行政職務(wù)的副職頭銜與學(xué)術(shù)頭銜的“副”職稱往往用不同的詞表達(dá),最為常用的英語(yǔ)詞是associate，例如：
副教授 associate professor
副研究員 associate research fellow
副主編 associate managing editor
副編審 associate senior editor
副審判長(zhǎng) associate judge
副研究館員 associate research fellow of ... (e.g., library science)

當(dāng)然，有些英語(yǔ)職位頭銜，如manager和headmaster，其副職頭銜可冠以assistant，例如:

以director表示職位的副職常以deputy director表示。此外， secretary, mayor, dean等頭銜的副職也可冠以deputy，例 如：
