在英文中表示“社會(huì)”的有“society”和“community”，同源自拉丁文，皆指社會(huì)，雖然如此，二者在用法上仍有差別。

　　Society指（1）社會(huì)，如西方社會(huì)（Western society）;(2) 社會(huì)階層，如高收入階層（a high income society）；（3）上流社會(huì)，社交界，如當(dāng)?shù)氐纳狭魃鐣?huì)（a local society）；（4）交往，如樂于與鄰居交往（enjoy the society of one's neighbors）；（5） 總稱的朋友，伴侶，如有許多朋友（have plenty of society ）；（6） 社團(tuán)，會(huì)社，學(xué)會(huì)，如辯論社（a debating society）; (7) 動(dòng)植物的小群落，如黃蜂窩（a society of wasps）。

　　Community指（1）社會(huì)或社區(qū)，特指由同住一地區(qū)或一國的人所構(gòu)成的社會(huì)或社區(qū)，如紐約的華僑社會(huì)（the Chinese community in New York）；（2）團(tuán)體，界，如工商界（business community）；（3）公眾，如社會(huì)貧困階層（the poorer classes of community）；（4）國家間的共同體，如歐洲防務(wù)共同體（European Defense Community）；（5）共有，共享，共同責(zé)任，如貨物的共有（the community of goods）；（6）共同性，一致，相同，如利益的一致（the community of interests）。

　　由此可見，這兩個(gè)詞雖然相似，但仍有一些區(qū)別： 1. 表示國際社會(huì)用“community” 2. 表示國內(nèi)社會(huì)或上流社會(huì)，用“society”。例如“society page”是社交新聞版，“society woman”是上流社會(huì)的女子。 3. 表示社區(qū)，即國內(nèi)社會(huì)中的較小單位，用“community ”。例如“community page” 是社區(qū)新聞版，“community leader”是社區(qū)領(lǐng)導(dǎo)。 4. 表示社團(tuán)，用“society”。 5. 其他如共同天線（antenna ），團(tuán)體精神（spirit community）則都用“community” 當(dāng)這兩個(gè)詞做形容詞時(shí)，尤可看出之間的差別，因此使用時(shí)要格外小心。
